Captain Jay's Blade Baits are some of the most effective baits for walleye fishing on Lake Erie. Individually built and hand painted, these blade baits create a vibration in the water to attract walleye to your area. The best way to fish blade baits is to snap jig them while you are drifting, keeping them vertical. Use a braided line with a barrel swivel and 18-inch fluorocarbon leader to ensure you feel the blade vibrating. The blade's proven fishing method is to lower it to the bottom, snap it up and come down with a controlled fall. Walleye generally strike either on the fall or as soon as the bait hits the bottom, so make sure you're pulling it back up to get the hook set!

Questions

How do I choose the right blade bait for the conditions I am fishing in?

There are a few factors to consider when selecting a blade bait for a particular fishing situation:

  • Water clarity: In clear water, you may want to use a blade bait with a more natural-looking finish, such as a silver or gold blade. In muddy or stained water, a blade bait with a brightly colored or highly reflective finish may be more effective.
  • Light conditions: In low light conditions, a blade bait with a lot of flash or reflective surfaces may be more visible to fish. In bright light, a more subdued blade bait may be a better choice.
  • Target species: Different blade baits are designed to mimic different types of prey, so consider the natural food sources of the species you are targeting when choosing a blade bait.
  • Water depth: The size and shape of the blade bait should be matched to the depth at which you will be fishing. A larger, heavier blade bait is better suited for deeper water, while a smaller, lighter blade bait is better for shallow water.

What is a blade bait?

Blade baits are a type of lure that is made up of a metal or plastic body shaped like a fish or other prey, with one or more blades attached to the body and typically two or more treble hooks. The blades create vibration and flash as they move through the water, attracting predatory fish. Blade baits are typically used for freshwater fishing, and are effective for catching a variety of species including bass, pike, and walleye.
